Who are in radar for Team India’s next support staff?

Following the official announcement of Gautam Gambhir as the new Team India head coach, the process of appointing a new support staff has commenced. Gambhir’s tenure is scheduled to commence with a Sri Lanka tour in July-August.

In addition to Rahul Dravid, the BCCI expressed their gratitude and bid farewell to batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip in an official statement posted on the website.

“The Board also congratulates Mr. Paras Mhambrey (Bowling Coach), Mr T. Dilip (Fielding Coach), and Mr Vikram Rathour (Batting Coach) on a highly successful tenure. The BCCI values their contribution and wishes them the best going forward,” the BCCI said in a statement.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, Gautam Gambhir, like his predecessors, has been granted autonomy in selecting his support staff. The first individual expected to collaborate with Gambhir is Abhishek Nayar, a former India cricketer and KKR coach.

Abhishek Nayar’s pivotal role in KKR’s triumph in IPL 2024 and his strong rapport with the team highlight his dedication and professionalism. His close association with India skipper Rohit Sharma further underscores his credentials. It is anticipated that Abhishek Nayar will be appointed as assistant coach, reflecting his proven track record and commitment to excellence.

For the bowling coach, the BCCI is considering former India pacers L Balaji or Zaheer Khan for the role. Zaheer Khan possesses extensive leadership expertise and has held the position of Director of Cricket Operations at Mumbai Indians, while Balaji has contributed as the bowling coach for Chennai Super Kings.

The BCCI is of the opinion that either Zaheer Khan or Balaji would be more suitable for the position of bowling coach, which is a role the BCCI is seeking to fill with someone capable of nurturing the next wave of fast bowlers, including Harshit Rana, Mayank Yadav, and Tushar Deshpande, among others.
