What’s Kohli’s message to BCCI on past conflicts with Gambhir?

As Gautam Gambhir starts his tenure as the head coach of the Indian cricket team, there is speculation about its implications for Virat Kohli, given his history of on-field conflicts with the former India opener.

Following Rahul Dravid’s confirmed departure as India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir emerged as the leading and favored choice, particularly due to his recent impactful contributions in the Indian Premier League (IPL). With Virat Kohli also agreeing to participate in India’s ODI series against Sri Lanka, it marks the first occasion they will collaborate within the same team under Gambhir’s leadership.

In light of this development, a report from Cricbuzz has confirmed that Kohli has assured the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that any previous differences with Gambhir will not affect their relationship within the Indian team. Both are aligned in their commitment to the team’s success, easing any concerns the board may have had.

Both Gambhir and Kohli are known for their passionate approach to cricket. Whether as captains of opposing teams in the IPL or more recently as mentors and senior players for their franchises, they have engaged in fiery clashes on the field. However, since Gambhir moved to Kolkata Knight Riders as a mentor, their relationship appeared to have improved, as evidenced by their interactions during an IPL 2024 match.

A few months back, Gambhir commented on his relationship with Kohli, suggesting that the public may not fully understand the depth of their bond.

What Gambhir had said

“The perception is far away from the reality. My relationship with Virat Kohli is something this country doesn’t need to know. He has as much right as I do to express himself and help our respective teams win. Our relation is not to give masala to the public,” Gambhir had said.

Earlier, Kohli had himself acknowledged that people were disappointed with him after he embraced Naveen-ul-Haq and Gautam Gambhir.

What Kohli had said

“People are very disappointed with my behaviour. I hugged Naveen, and then the other day, Gauti bhai [Gautam Gambhir came and hugged me. Your masala is over, so you’re booing. We’re not kids anymore,” Kohli had said during a Puma event earlier.

Initially, both Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma were not likely to be part of the Indian squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. However, as it will be Gambhir’s debut series as head coach, the duo decided to make themselves available for selection.
