Following a 20-run loss to Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in IPL 2024 on Tuesday evening, Kumar Sangakkara, the Director of Cricket at Rajasthan Royals (RR), maintains that his team had the potential to emerge victorious despite the unexpected dismissal of captain Sanju Samson.
Samson played an impressive innings of 86 runs off 46 balls, showcasing exceptional timing in his eight boundaries and six maximums. Unfortunately, his innings was cut short in the 16th over when Shai Hope took a remarkable catch at long-on off Mukesh Kumar, just inches before the boundary ropes.
It seemed as though Hope had effectively secured the ball, with multiple replays corroborating this assertion. However, a different perspective raised some skepticism regarding the validity of the catch. Despite this ambiguity, the third umpire ultimately relied on the initial two replays and ruled Samson out.

The RR captain appeared dissatisfied with the rapid decision-making and proceeded towards the dugout. Nevertheless, he subsequently changed direction and went back to engage in discussions with the umpires.
What Sangakkara Said
“It depends on replays and angles; sometimes you think the foot has touched. It is a difficult one for third umpire to judge. The game was at a crucial stage; what happens in cricket is you have different perspectives. At the end of the day, you have to abide by the decision third umpire has made,” Sangakkara said in the post-match press conference.
“If we have some other kind of opinion, we will share and sort it out with the umpires. Irrespective of that dismissal, we should have won the game. But Delhi played really well and fought till the end. They were very smart with their bowling at the back-end,” he added.
Later, Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) captain Sanju Samson was fined 30 per cent of his match fees for “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision” during the clash.
“On-field umpires have to go by what TV umpire say. At the end of the day, all the players have to abide by it. There’s a lot of pressure out in the middle on players and officials, so we try to sort it out the best way we can,” added Sangakkara.
